Hi Carolinabirders,
Yesterday, Paul Rogers, Gary Phillips and myself looked for the Limpkin at
Savannah NWR in Jasper County,SC. We were at the exact spot as described
by Lex in his earlier post. We did not see the bird foraging in that area.
However, we had a MAYBE-a flying bird that looked a lot like the Limpkin
plate of the flying bird in the Sibley Guide. It was seen by Gary and
myself but not by Paul. On the dorsal side it was a uniform light
gray/brown, almost tan, but the back was a dark chocolate brown with with a
whitish center. It was smaller than a Great Blue Heron and flew differently
faster but shallower wingbeats. Underside was seen briefly with the body
appearing brown and the underwing rather dark. Plumage of the dorsal side
eliminated Great Blue, Little Blue, Am. Bittern-no dark flight feathers.
The bird settled down almost directly out about 150 yards from the water
control structure, to the right of a line of three medium size trees.
There was an opening in the vegetation and you could see an open area of
the matted green vegetation floating on the shallow water. But the only
things we saw probing were some Glossy Ibis.
43 species all told.
