Re: Retention of Awards and Plaques

Ha! I love that! I had something similar happen at an institution where I
previously worked, in that duplicates of an important Senator's papers were
blown across campus after being placed in a dumpster. He was not happy.
Since then, I've always shredded documents we dispose of.

I also tell potential donors about our shredding policy as an example of the
lengths we go to to protect their privacy. They always seem impressed by
that. Our shredder has turned into one of our best development tools.

Subject: Retention of Awards and Plaques

If a decision is reached to discard awards and plaques, it is a good
idea to do so discreetly. I speak from experience. A number of years
ago, we discarded them, only to have our previous Executive Director
contacted by the wife of the donor demanding to know why her husband's
plaques were turning up all over town. It seems that street people,
going through our dumpster, found the plaques and treated them as their
personal trophies. The donor's wife, who had served as president of our
Friends organization, was naturally irate. However, the donor, a laid
back person, had authorized our disposal of them.
