Re: retention of awards and plaques

I've been reading these answers with a small degree of amusement. The
President of our University will be retiring in a year and a half and
has discussed this issue with me in the last week. He let me know that
he has 400 awards and plaques (not to mention the c.50 that he has sent
to me over the last 12 years) and wanted to know whether or not we
wanted them in the Archives.

I have saved quite a number of these awards from other collections, and
for the most part, we use them in exhibits or displays. NOBODY has ever
requested them-most of the information is documented elsewhere, in press
releases, biographical sketches, vitas, etc. I do think that a sampling
of the most beautiful, most important, or most unique might be the way
to go.... We are also going to either videotape our President talking
about each award (so that we have anecdotal info to go with an item) and
possibly photograph each one. But, to actually take 400 plaques into
our collection??????? We simply don't have the room!
