Library and Archives Commission, Liberty, Texas.

JOB DESCRIPTION

WORKING TITLE:                 Archivist I              DIVISION:

ESSENTIAL TASKS
Arranges and describes records and manuscripts and prepares finding aids.
Researches and writes agency histories and biographical sketches.
Provides reference and research services to archives users in person, by
phone, or mail.
Directs tours of the Sam Houston Regional Library & Research Center and
other facilities and makes presentations and provides orientation
information to visiting groups.
Catalogs and maintains Sam Houston Center's artifacts.
Directs and performs maintenance and cleaning of historical structures and
their contents.

OTHER DUTIES
Conducts initial reviews of newly accessioned materials.
Inventories and produces preliminary inventories to newly accessioned
materials.
Researches the provenance of records and manuscripts.
Assists with the maintenance and cleaning of archival storage areas and with
the relocation of collections.
Advises regarding the archival value of records and manuscripts.
Transfers records from local government agencies and manuscripts from
private donors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Masters degree from an accredited school with a major in History,
Government, Library Science or related discipline, and course work in
archival administration.
Ability to collect, organize, research, and interpret information from
various sources and to compose descriptive narratives which are clear,
concise, and grammatically correct.
Ability to work semi-independently and to exercise professional judgment.
One year job experience working with the general public.
Work/school experience requiring use of Windows 95 or Macintosh personal
computers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of MARC-AMC.
Knowledge of historical research methodology.
Knowledge of Texas history and government.
Course work in processing artifacts or museum collections.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and FileMaker Pro.
Experience working in museum setting.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must have valid motor vehicle operator's license, and must obtain valid
Texas operator's license within thirty (30) days of employment.
Must show proof of current minimum state required automobile liability
insurance coverage.
Must work scheduled Saturdays and occasional overtime work.
Ability and physical strength to lift 50 lb. boxes while climbing library
ladders in order to shelve and reshelve holdings.  Will be tested on this
ability.
Ability to move in and around personal workspace and to and from other areas
of the Center and historical structures.
Ability to perform visual activities requiring prolonged attention to detail
such as evaluating and editing computer graphical displays.
Ability to hear and understand speech to interact with coworkers and clients
on a routine basis.
Ability to travel infrequently by automobile required.
Submission of a writing sample which can be a finding aid (preferred),
publication, or report.
Submission of complete college transcripts.
Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing 50 pounds.
Criminal history check will be required of successful applicant.

SUPERVISION
No supervision duties.
Reports to the Director-Archivist of the Sam Houston Center.
