Community Commitment to History

William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth, announced that
eleven awards will be distributed at a February 3rd ceremony as part of
the Documentary Heritage grant program of the Massachusetts Historical
Records Advisory Board.

"These grant recipients have made a commitment to the history of their
community and the state. They deserve our applause and our support."
Stated Secretary Galvin, "Congratulations, on the efforts they have made
to build partnerships and to reach out to their communities for
support."

The award winners include the Valley Women's History Collaborative,
Amherst; FAIR Millennium Committee, Attleboro; Beverly Public Library
and High School, Beverly; Teamsters Local 25, Charlestown; Monson Free
Library and Reading Room Association, Monson; Phinehas S. Newton
Library, Royalston; Sheffield Historical Society, Sheffield; Essex
National Heritage Area, Salem; Bay State Historical League, Waltham;
J.V. Fletcher Library, Westford Historical Society, and Westford Town
Clerk, Westford; and Westminster Historical Commission, Westminster.

The grant program has been highly competitive thus far with many
exciting and fundable projects. The competitive grants program funds
projects that promote and result in the documentation, preservation, and
use of historical records in Massachusetts. Priority projects address
the following issues: educate the public to value historical records and
archives; work collaboratively to promote common goals; plan for
adequate documentation of Massachusetts history; and improve the
accessibility and preservation of historical records.

Remaining deadlines are March 1, 2000, and August 1, 2000. Applicants
may request a minimum of $1,000 up to a maximum of $20,000 for their
projects. Eligible applicants are non-profit, public or private
organizations, such as repositories, educational institutions, community
organizations, professional associations, or local or state government
agencies. Grant applicants are expected to contribute both cash and
in-kind cost share support towards their project.

Applicants are expected to contact Heritage staff to discuss potential
collaborators and to ensure that applications meet all requirements.
Grant workshops will be held around the state during each of the cycles.
These dates and more information on the grant program are posted on the
MHRAB web-site, http:www.state.ma.us/sec/arc/arcaac/aacintro.htm.

If you are interested in applying for a grant or would like to learn

The grant program is sponsored by William Francis Galvin, Secretary of
the Commonwealth, and the Massachusetts Historical Records Advisory
Board and made possible through a grant from the National Historical
Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), a division of the National
Archives and Records Administration.
