Re: archives budget

Matt--
I started an archival program over six years ago. I had a more generous
supplies budget, but I didn't spend all of it that year.

I bought a few basic tools--staple extractors, a small spatula, dusting
brushes, some acid-free bond paper, and some basic texts. I also
invested in some folders and document cases, which I think will be
important for you too. In my opinion, you need to dazzle them with your
expertise. If you have these rather unusual (in a general office sense)
boxes on the shelves, on your work table, etc. it will immediately
impress upon people that this is not your ordinary storage area--and you
really know what you're doing. Don't buy a huge supply of cases, but 20
or 30 shouldn't break the budget.

When I started my current enterprise, my work area was shared with two
administrative assistants. As I unpacked my tools and supplies, it gave
me a great opportunity to begin sharing why I needed these tools, these
boxes, etc. I immediately had two converts. In short, use your supplies
to help educate (and build internal support among) the people around
you.

Good luck.
