Re: Terms in use - "Archives"

At the Arizona State Archives we regularly receive calls from unknowing
staff at government agencies saying that they want to "archive" their
materials. This invariably means that they meant to call our sister
division, Records Management, and they have a bunch of non-permanent
records they'd like to get rid of (a large sign drapes the entrance to the
State Records Center reading, "This is NOT the Archives!"). I suppose this
is common in nearly every state, and along with the equally prevalent
misuse of the term "archive" in the electronic records business, represents
a HUGE challenge to archivists & public historians who work in archives.
We need to improve public knowledge about archives and their role in
government and society, not avoid the terms that have always defined us.
