SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CATALOGING LIBRARIAN


The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seek an energetic and highly motivated Special Collections Cataloging Librarian. The position offers an excellent opportunity for personal and professional growth and for significant contribution to a dynamic and forward-looking ARL library with innovative staff and a well-supported special collections budget.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Cataloging Services, the successful candidate is expected to provide leadership for the cataloging of rare books and other special collections materials; stay abreast of developments in the field; work closely with and serve as a resource person for the Rare Materials Cataloging Team; and perform original cataloging of rare books and other special collections materials. The incumbent will also focus on the cataloging of collections from finding aids from any of our three Special Collections units: Historical Collections and Labor Archives, University Archives and Rare Books and Manuscripts. The incumbent will work closely with faculty and staff in the Special Collections Department to set priorities and coordinate cataloging projects. Duties may also include developing collections in a selected discipline or language as appropriate.
Requirements: ALA-accredited MLS; B. A. degree in humanities or historical social sciences; recent post-MLS special collections cataloging experience or equivalent; knowledge of two Western European languages (preferably Latin, German or French); strong knowledge of AACR2rev, LCRIs, LC classification, LCSH, and MARC tagging; experience in an automated cataloging environment and a bibliographic utility, preferably OCLC or RLIN; experience with the Web and the cataloging of collections of finding aids; good writing and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively. Familiarity with DCRB and NACO and with cataloging of manuscripts and archival materials is desirable. Advanced degree in humanities is also desirable. Evidence of potential for promotion and tenure will be considered.
Salary and benefits: This is a tenure track faculty position. The successful candidate will be expected to be active in research, scholarship and service as a faculty member at Penn State. Minimum salary is $35,000 or higher, depending on education, experience and academic qualifications. Rank dependant on qualifications.
