ART spring workshop

The Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York
Presents Its Spring Workshop 2000

INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONIC RECORDS

Tom Ruller will lead this workshop on Tuesday, May 9, at the National
Archives Northeast Region Office, 201 Varick Street, from 9:30 am to
4:30 pm.

The workshop will introduce participants to the issues associated with
acquiring, preserving, and providing access to archival records in
electronic formats. Topics will include: an overview of electronic
recordkeeping methods; approaches and methods for appraising and
selecting archival records in electronic form; requirements for
preservation of digital materials; and providing reference and access to
digital materials. The workshop will also include a review of current
research in the area of electronic records management and preservation.

This workshop will focus on records that are created and maintained
solely in digital formats. It will not focus on digital imaging
technologies. The workshop is intended for archivists who have a strong
understanding of archival principles and techniques as applied to
records in paper formats, but who need basic training on how to apply
those principles to records in electronic form.

Mr. Ruller is an Applications Area Coordinator in the Information
Technology Services Division of the New York State Education Department.
He previously worked at the New York State Archives and Records
Administration where he was a staff member of the Center for Electronic
Records with responsibility for providing records management and
archival preservation services for records in electronic form in New
York State government. Mr. Ruller has led many professional development
workshops on electronic records management and automated systems in
archives and has served as a consultant to a number of electronic
records program development projects. Most recently he developed and led
the Society of American Archivists' first on-line workshop, "Basic
Electronic Records."
