The American Jewish Historical Society is seeking a dynamic individual to
fill a full-time, permanent, professional position at its new headquarters
at the Center for Jewish History near Union Square.

Since 1892, the American Jewish Historical Society has served as the
national archives of the Jewish people in America.  Its holdings are the
preeminent resource for scholars, museums, filmmakers, publishers, and
genealogists who want to document the rich tapestry of American Jewish life
from the 1590s to the present.  The oldest national ethnic historical
organization in the United States, the Society was the first systematic
collector of archival, museum, and published sources depicting the
religious, communal, cultural, and political life of American Jewry, and
Jewish contributions to American life.

DUTIES:

        *       Reference (60% or 21 hours per week), including working with
researchers in the reading room 14 hours per week, scheduling reading room
appointments, and responding to research queries by email, telephone, fax,
and standard mail
        *       Administration (20% or 7 hours per week), under supervision
of Archivist, including accessioning new acquisitions, maintaining the
accessions register, and working with the Library and Archives committee (a
sub-committee of the Society's Board of Trustees)
        *       Special projects (20% or 7 hours per week), including
representing the Society on Center for Jewish History committees,
processing, special research projects, and participating in collection
development.


QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS with archival concentration or MA in
History with archival concentration.  Demonstrable knowledge of archival
theory and practice including experience with accessioning manuscript
material.  Minimum two years professional experience in archives field.
Proficient with IBM-compatible computers using Windows NT operating system.
Background in American Jewish history and ACA certification are desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Mid-30s.  The Society provides its full-time employees
with a complete benefits package which includes medical and dental plans,
life insurance, employer contribution to tax sheltered annuity, 2-3 weeks
vacation, personal and sick days, and all Jewish holidays and major US
holidays off.
