MARCH 2000 MEETING NOTICE

James L. Gates Jr., Library Director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, NY will give a presentation on the History and Development of the Library at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was founded in 1939. It opened with one small section of books and now holds 2.6 million items including books, photographs, scrapbooks, programs, scorecards, clipping files on every major league player including Negro Leagues and Women's Leaguers.

Mr. Gates will demonstrate how, over time, the library was organized into a full-fledged library providing all types of library services and handling 65,000 inquiries a year. The inquiries come from a wide range of patrons and include all media, documentary film crews and school children.

Mr. Gates received a MLS degree from Indiana University in 1983, and initially worked at the law library of the University of Notre Dame. He was Head of Technical Services at the Boston University law library from 1985 through 1989, and became the Assistant Director of the law library of the University of Florida in 1989. He was appointed the Library Director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. He received his BA in Classical Political Theory from Belmont Abbey College in 1979, and a second Masters in International Studies from the University of Notre Dame.
