Re: Moveable shelving

In contracting out, be sure that the RFP or bid specifications
and contract say two things:

Items to be moved are rare and fragile and must be handled
with care and slowly, at the discretion of the onsite staff
member. (or something like this)

and

The moving company must recognize that onsite staff have
the authority to oversee moving activities, especially if they
feel mover actions are harming the collections.

We had something like these in our contract and were able
to put an immediate stop when a lower-level mover supervisor
began screaming at the staff that they were moving too slowly,
and the "hired hands" began literally throwing handfuls of
rare books or slamming them onto the plywood moving trucks.
You need to be sure the moving equipment is clean or provide
with rolls of tyvek or something to help against dirt and abrasion.
