Spencer Art Reference Library
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art


The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is seeking a dynamic, energetic individual
to provide leadership and direction for the Spencer Art Reference Library as
well as Slide Library, and Archives.

The Spencer Art Reference Library serves Museum departments including
curatorial, education, and conservation, plus a variety of public patrons
including students and faculty, collectors and scholars. Library holdings of
120,000 can be found in the on-line catalog, Leonardo, available on-site or
via the Internet (www. nelson-atkins.org/library). Collections include
93,000 books and journals; 27,000 auction catalogs, about 800 current
journal titles, plus ephemera files. The Archives holdings reflect
institutional history and includes a few notable manuscript collections. The
Slide Library, first and foremost, serves the Museum staff, and serves
regional faculty by lending slides for instructional purposes. The Slide
Library collection totals 97,000 slides.

JOB DUTIES: Provides leadership and direction for the Spencer Art Reference
Library, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Archives and Slide Library.
Responsibilities include: planning, administration, management and budget
preparation / management. Planning short-term and long-term goals for
services and collections; advocating and advancing broader public use of the
Museum's research and reference services. Responsibilities for personnel
management include: hiring, supervising, motivating, and evaluating staff.
Works with Division of External Affairs to market collections and services
and extend the Library support group.

The Museum's current building expansion program includes a new, integrated
facility for the Library, Slide Library and Archives. The Head Librarian is
the primary representative for the critical issues, needs and interests of
the Library, Slide Library, and Archives during the design, construction and
move-in phases.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills. Excellent organizational and
interpersonal skills, with seven to ten years of demonstrated managerial and
administrative experience in an art library setting including: staff
management, financial management, collection development, automation and
systems planning. Knowledge of reference services and technical services.
Ability to be flexible and responsive to an evolving work environment.
Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with others. Demonstrated
commitment to building public services and outreach programs in a library
setting. Experience in planning new library facilities.
Desirable: Advanced degree in art history preferred. Experience in planning
new facilities. Reading knowledge of one of the following languages: German,
French, Italian or Chinese.
