Re: Shelf location in MARC records?

The Dittrick Medical History Center has cataloged its medical artifacts
using the MaRC Audiovisual Format for about 10 years. We input our records
into OCLC and then transfer them to our local University library catalog.
(We are part of Case Western Reserve University) Our museum storage is
physically arranged according to the NLM's Medical Subject Headings. This
storage information is put in the call number field (035). When a patron
searches the Library's database for one of our instruments the information
in the 035 shows up as the call number (ie. Auscultation : Stethoscope :
Binaural : 79.15.3)

Our artifacts are not stored as collections, rather they are stored
individually by MeSH heading and then by accession number. If we want to
designate a particular collection as such, we put the name of the
collection (ie. William Smith Collection) in a 246 field as an alternate name.

If you need any further info please don't hesitate to contact me. We have
written a cataloging manual and I can send you a copy if you are interested.
