Re: odors coming from Audio and video collections
Dear Rob,
We have a variety of papers and boxboards which in addition to the
traditional alkaline buffering, contain zeolites or a combination of zeolites
and activated carbon. Both the zeolite and activated carbon have been
specifically developed and formulated for archival storage, and it is highly
probable they will solve or at least greatly ameliorate your odor problem. To
give you a sense of the available capacity, the MicroChamber paper can remove
170 times more acetic acid than a buffered paper of the same size and weight.
If the culprit is something other than acetic acid, it is likely these papers
will also remove the molecule(s) causing the problem. One of these
MicroChamber papers has been used for some time to solve a problem with
offgasing from reels of audio tape. Usually any molecule offending people?s
sense of smell is also causing deterioration in collections stored in the
vicinity of the source, so if the offending odor is removed, the collection
will benefit too. If you want to see if this material will help, I?ll be glad
to send some to you to try.
