Position Vacancy Announcement



HEAD OF ARCHIVES & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

The Otto G. Richter Library of the University of Miami invites applications
and nominations for the position of Head of Archives & Special Collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the University Librarian, the successful candidate
will oversee the daily operations of the department and provide leadership
and direction for administrative, public service, and technical service
operations of the Archives & Special Collections Department.  Specific
responsibilities include:
*       managing the department including: development of goals and
objectives, implementation and evaluation of services, development and
implementation of policies and procedures, planning and oversight for
department budget, and supervision of faculty, staff, and student
assistants;
*       overseeing collection development for archives and special
collections across a broad range of materials including books, manuscripts,
ephemera, broadsides, photographs, and electronic media;
*       administering a university-wide records management program for
records in all formats in accordance with state guidelines and best
professional practices;
*       overseeing the cataloging, conservation, and preservation of
archival and special collections materials;
*       planning, developing, and teaching of scholarly programs, classes,
and workshops in cooperation with university and library faculty;
*       designing and mounting exhibitions in print and electronic formats
to publicize the collections;
*       participating in grant development, writing, and management;
*       developing active working relationships with colleagues,
administrators, staff, patrons, and donors;
*       providing specialized reference assistance to researchers in person
and at a distance;
*       maintaining statistics and compiling narrative and statistical
reports on departmental activities and trends for annual, monthly, and other
library reports; and
*       participating in library and university committees and in
professional activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications are:
*       ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent;
*       minimum of 3 years of experience in archives and special collections
or rare books environment in an academic/research library, with at least 5
years of overall total experience in academic/research libraries;
*       demonstrated familiarity with RBMS cataloging standards and
procedures, and with archival practices and procedures;
*       proficiency in at least one modern European language;
*       demonstrated successful supervisory experience and proven management
skills;
*       ability to view issues from a library-wide perspective and openness
to organizational change;
*       demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and to the
teacher/scholar model of public and university service and the proven
ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population;
*       ability to work well both independently and collaboratively
maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, and
staff in a complex and rapidly changing environment;
*       excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; and
*       evidence of continued professional development, involvement, and
contribution.

FACULTY RANK

Twelve-month appointment at Assistant or Associate Professor rank;
tenure-track or non-tenure options available.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with qualifications; minimum of $43,500.

INSTITUTIONAL ENVIRONMENT

One of the oldest universities in South Florida, the University of Miami is
a private Research I university with a student population of approximately
8,400 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate and professional students.  One of
only 26 private research universities to operate both a law and medical
school, UM is located near one the nation's most dynamic and diverse
metropolises.  Comprised of 14 schools and colleges, UM offers a wide
selection of academic disciplines ranging from architecture and
international studies to law and medicine.  UM has established an
international presence in medicine, engineering, law, the marine sciences,
international studies, business, communications, and other disciplines.
Opened in 1926, the University will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2001.


Located in suburban Coral Gables in the center of the 260-acre lush and
tropical main campus, the Otto G. Richter Library serves as the main library
for the university and has a collection of more than 2 million volumes and
is a depository for federal, state, and international government documents.
The Richter Library has a materials budget of approximately $4 million, a
staff of 34 librarians and 85 support staff, and is a member of ARL, ASERL,
OCLC, and SOLINET.  Through IBISWEB, its Innovative Interfaces web-based
catalog, the library provides access to more than 200 databases and 2,000
plus electronic journals.  The Richter Library is currently in the midst of
a $16 million building renovation project, which is scheduled for completion
