Re: Alm's House?

According to the Historical Society of PA's Guide to MSS Collections' blurb
"the City Almshouse and infirmary, established in 1732, provided 'shelter,
support, and employment for the poor and indigent, a hospital for the sick,
and an asylum for the idiotic, the insane, and the orphan.' Successor
organizations that have carried on its services have been the Blockley
Almshouse, Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia Hospital for Mental
Disases (Byberry), Home for Indigent (Holmesburg)." HSP has 3 volumes,
the latest dating from 1837. Peter did a little looking and learned that
there were several almshouses in Philadelphia; the one you may have is
probably the Blockley Almshouse authorized by the legislature in 1853,
located in West Philadelphia (out in the boonies, at that time). There was
an earlier one (date?) in the city located between 10th and 11th, Spruce &
Pine Streets, but he has been unable to find out when that came down.
