Re: PDF As A Standard

If you have a search engine that looks at the directories in which you store
your PDF versions of files and those PDF files are not only the scanned images
of, for example, newspaper articles, but also have "captured" the text, then I
believe you would have full-text search capabilities of your PDF files as well.

We scan, capture, and then import PDF versions of contracts into an Electronic
Document Management System. These contracts are full-text searchable because we
have "captured" the text of the image as well.

This is an interesting discussion of PDF,especially in
light of the discussion I was having with a small
newspaper publisher. He suggested that rather than
microfilming newspapers PDF versions would be
preferable. I pointed out that there would be no
additional intellectual access, only physical (through
the internet). This did not concern him---but it does
me. Publisher produced PDF archived somehow seems
fine, but producing it from extant papers doesn't. I
think user expectations would be raised and
dashed---when customers hear a newspaper is
web-accessible they expect full-text keyword
searching.
