Bobbi,

Having closed field sites and former home office sites for a global engineering
firm, I have had much experience with shipping records and "archival" material
across country. Of all of the methods I have tried (professional shipper,
rail, truck, trailer, several cars pulling trailers, FedEx, RPS, etc.), the
simplest most reliable and ultimately cost effective for the load you describe
is the following:

1) Locate a responsible student worker in your organization who can lift and
move boxes on his/her own.

2) Offer pay plus expenses for this person to fly to the debarking point.

3) Give him/her enough cash (or institution credit card) to rent a truck
(Ryder, U-Haul).

4) Work out an itinerary and travel plan (route, overnight stops, etc.)

5) Then let them bring the shipment home.

This has worked extremely well for preserving the shipment, keeping costs at a
minimum, and timeliness.

I have had shipments made this way from Lenexa, KS, to Arlington, VA; from
Albany, NY, to Albuquerque, NM, and greater -- including the down the Alaskan
Highway.

If you wish more detail, please feel free to write me off list.
