Re: Renovations and Patron Use

During our renovation, Special Collections was moved one mile from
the library to another campus building, while over 50% of our cataloged
collections and 100% of our uncataloged collections were placed in
storage and unaccessible for 15 months. Because I had separated
what I believed to be heavy used collections from the lightly used ones,
our usage, while it dipped, did not do so to the extreme. Also the
building we were moved to was at the front entrance of the campus
with its own parking lot...and many community users and patrons were
thrilled to be able to park next to the building and make a short walk up
a ramp sidewalk!

When we moved back into the library, the library as a whole DID experience
increased use for the first year--much of it for folks who wanted to see the
new quarters--however our use dropped because as I was frequently told,
it's hard to get to the new library. You have to park and walk forever! :D

Also we noticed that as publicity increased about being closed for moves,
limited hours due to construction, etc., you created a much longer impression
in users that you were unavailable.
