Re: Renovations and Patron Use

Our library has gone through this twice in my 30 years here. Once, a new
wing doubling the size of the building was added. We conducted several
weeks of "Operation Chaos" to direct people to new locations as the moves
were made, with collections and services available all but 2 days. I
believe there was a small drop in usage, but the people providing info to
the public did a good job, the new wing was attractive, and it went pretty
well. Organization is all, and patient, good-humored staff help a lot
too.
The next time was for asbestos removal. All the staff and essential
materials were moved to other buildings on campus for the 3 summer
months. There was paging in areas that were judged safe. Usage usually
drops in the summer anyway, but it dropped a lot that summer. No amount
of organization and information-posting could compensate for scattered
collections and services, no access to some colections, and no air
conditioning in the largest temporary location.
