Re: Capping (canopies) over shelving
One consideration is the slow "disaster" of dust accumulation. The books
or other materials on the top, un-canopied shelf will catch and hold
dust. Over time, the dust will attract moisture and insects. Not to
mention the sneezing and eye irritation resulting from an unwary person
looking up while removing a dusty item from the top shelf.
If damage from ceiling lighting is a possibility, canopies can help.
