Query: Non-Library reporting structure

Hello,

In relation to a review of Cal Poly's archival program, I'm looking into
precedents for housing/managing the institutional archives within an
academic or administrative unit or division other than the university
library. If your archival program fits this description, I wonder if you
wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts with me in regard to a few of the
benefits and drawbacks of this relationship.

For instance . . .

Do you feel you have more or less visibility, and thus support, for your
department than you might if you were part of the library?

What impact has your reporting structure had on issues such as your
budget . . .staffing . . . storage, public, and work space?

Do you feel reporting to another office has affected, for better or
worse, access to the collections by students, alumni, and the public?

I've chiefly worked in library settings, though I have also worked in an
archives which reported to the organization's vice president for
development. It was quite different in terms of cashflow and
programmatic priorities.

I'ld be most grateful for your comments.
