Re: p/t archivist - Los Angeles

I can't even count the number of times this happened to me right after I
graduated from library school. I did not have really any experience prior to
library school, but while I was in school, I did an internship and worked
what hours I was not in class or studying at the university library and also
did a practicum. Many employers seemed to say that experience was not
required, but they wound up hiring somebody with 3-4 years experience or
that they required 3-4 years experience for a job paying $22,000. Come on,
who do they think they are kidding? I would have worked for $22,000 back
then, but you have to give a person a chance in order for them to get any
experience. My first full-time job besides substiting as a teacher and
librarian in a public school was as a library assistant in a university
library doing reference work, library instruction -- all the same stuff the
librarians did, just getting paid less for it. I eventually got a
professional job in Kansas for three years and left there to come to St.
Louis.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Guys, I applied for this job (I am newly
out of Graduate School with an M.A. in History and an emphasis in Archives
and a steady year's worth of experience in internships, etc.) and WAS DENIED
because I didn't have enough experience... She wants someone with 3-4 years
for a basic survey and boxing-up job. Additionally (and WHAT really made me
mad), I drove over an hour to be rejected in less than 10 minutes -
apparently, the interviewer didn't bother to look at my resume beforehand.
Welcome to this job market, I guess.

(Thank you for letting me put in my "two cents"!!)

These people have been polling for help for months now. Trouble is, $10/hr.

will hardly get you a file clerk in Los Angeles, (That's $20,000 a
year--without benefits, so make that closer to $16,000), let alone an
archivist.

Come on folks, are we professionals or not?
