LYNDHURST -- Contending that three members of a taxpayers group have been
harassing them with a barrage of information requests, school trustees are
seeking a court order limiting the requests.
In a lawsuit filed last week, township school officials say that the dozens
of information requests during the past two years by the Lyndhurst residents
-- Stanley Kaminski, Mary Sheridan, and Elaine Stella -- have hampered
employees' ability to run the district.
The requests, the lawsuit alleges, "have tied up board personnel, services
and resources to such an extent that the ability of the board to deliver a
thorough and efficient education has been, and will continue to be,
seriously compromised."

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- They were neglected old letters, maps, and legal
papers boxed up in a modest home of an elderly woman.
After the woman's death this year, the boxes were opened and their contents
were carefully spread out on tables at the Acorn auction house by owners Jim
and Danielle Carter.
Bit by bit, the Carters became amazed.
The boxes held letters from Aaron Burr and Francis Scott Key along with a
portrait of Colonial-era Gen. John Bradstreet. There were yellowed deeds and
wills, hand-drawn maps of old Utica, and newspapers reporting Custer's Last
Stand in 1876 and President Andrew Johnson's impeachment in 1868.

Martinez -- The intriguing items in the display window at the former
Hilson's department store in Martinez have been luring passers-by for
months, even though the new tenants aren't officially opening until today.
By all rights, the proprietors should post a sign that says: ``Warning:
Contents Addictive.''
The roomy Main Street storefront is now a museum gallery for the Contra
Costa County Historical Society, and the shelves inside are stocked with
irresistible offerings for anyone who is curious about the past or simply
loves a good story.

That state's military documents may help locate ancestors
If you are searching for an ancestor on the 1860 census, as I was, and can't
find him, "The 1864 Census for Re-organizing the Georgia Militia,"
abstracted and compiled by Nancy J. Cornell, might be the publication that
will help you.
I had been searching for a particular ancestor on any 1860 Alabama Census
for some time. The last place I had located him was on the 1850 Coosa
County, Ala., Census. When I received this book, I found him listed over in
Colquitt County, Ga.

Mutilation of Hawaiian flag a myth
http://starbulletin.com/2000/08/14/features/stuffs.html

by Burl Burlingame
The local urban legend about the mutilation of the Hawaiian flag has a life
of its own. It was repeated as gospel recently by none other than Sen. Dan
Inouye, who should know better.
Since this weekend was the anniversary of annexation by the United States,
let's shake this particular eyewash.
The Hawaiian flag, complete with the British union jack in the corner and
the stripes reflecting the United States, was created to show both powers
how friendly -- and neutral! -- Hawaii was during the War of 1812.

MMC 'hid customer complaints for 30 years'
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/0816cr02.htm

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (MMC), which is suspected of systematically
concealing customer complaints that could have led to vehicle recalls,
likely began keeping two different sets of records--one to be submitted to
the Transport Ministry and the other to be kept at the company--shortly
after the recall system was introduced in 1969, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned
Tuesday.
At a press conference last month, Mitsubishi officials said the company
began the practice of concealing customer complaints as early as 1992.
