Course Description:
Archaeological resources crime continues to have a serious destructive effect on the nation's cultural heritage. Looting, vandalism and other forms of unauthorized damage or removal of archaeological resources on public, tribal and private lands cause irreparable harm to this heritage on a daily basis. Effective enforcement of the various laws protecting archaeological resources is a major factor in reducing the current lever of damage and loss.
This program is taught by recognized national experts on the investigative, archaeological and legal aspects of archaeological violations and provides in-depth instruction on archaeological law enforcement. Law enforcement officers, archaeologists and prosecuting attorneys will gain a thorough understanding of:
? The nature of archaeological resources crime problem
? The laws which protect archaeological resources
? The detection, investigation and prosecution of archaeological violationsThe five day course consists of lectures, a field trip, case studies and an archaeological crime scene practical exercise.

Please note the University of Nevada, Reno will be offering a series of four classes dealing with archaeological resources protection issues as outlined below.
· "Archaeological Law Enforcement" a five day class which deals with detection, investigation and prosecution of archaeological violations;
· "Archaeological Damage Assessment" a five day class which teaches archaeologists how to develop the cost and value determinations and damage assessment reports required for ARPA cases;
· "The Archaeological Resources Protection Act: Understanding Its Applications in Criminal and Civil Contexts" a three day class which is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the procedures for criminal prosecutions and civil penalty assessments under ARPA;
· "Managing Archaeological Resources Protection" a two day class which provides land managers with an overview of the archaeological resource crime problem and strategies for managing archaeological resources protection activities.
