OXFORD - A bankruptcy case to decide the fate of a popular local restaurant
has taken a new turn.
Police report that a computer hard drive, which contained financial
information related to the business, was recently stolen.
Police said there was no sign of forced entry and that liquor and other
valuable items were untouched.
Police believe the theft occurred sometime during the weekend of Aug. 18 and
the investigation is continuing.

Mental health agency accused of fraud
Records were falsified, former supervisors say

The client was threatening suicide. But the staff member at Northeast
Community Mental Health Center who took the call on a Friday afternoon last
year didn't jump into crisis intervention. Instead, the staffer told the
patient the agency would call back Monday, and schedule an appointment for
Tuesday.
The incident, noted in a county audit report, illustrates the abysmal state
of affairs at Northeast, a taxpayer-funded agency responsible for treating
1,000 of the area's poorest mentally ill patients in East Cleveland and in
the Collinwood and Glenville sections of Cleveland.

Photo of nearly nude police said public record for release
http://www.azcentral.com/news/0822AZ--NearNude-ON.html

Associated Press
TUCSON - A gag photo of seminude Tucson police officers taken while they
were on duty is a public record and should be released, an appellate court
says.
The male officers posed for the picture in December as a joke gift for a
female officer. In it they were wearing only socks and boots while holding
helmets over their privates.
In a ruling announced Friday, a 3-judge panel of the Arizona Court of
Appeals reversed a June 1 decision by Pima County Superior Court Judge John
F. Kelly against releasing the photo.
Kelly also said the picture was a public record but that "the privacy
interest of the officers and their families would be harmed if the
photographs were to be released."

Montgomery Reevaluates Openness of Records
http://washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A1686-2000Aug21.html

by Jo Becker
When Tony Caffrey lost a $7.5 million contract to manage county-owned liquor
stores three years ago, he wanted to know why his bid was unsuccessful.
But what began as the Gaithersburg resident's routine request for public
information has turned into a debate over public access to Montgomery County
government documents and meetings, a debate that could have statewide
implications.
It led residents to question the county's commitment to open government. It
set the county attorney and the county executive at odds. And it culminated
yesterday in an about-face by the Montgomery County Council.

Historians says Nazi records might shed light on war criminal deals
http://www.ohio.com/bj/news/ohio/docs/029065.htm

by John Affleck
Associated Press
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The declassification of U.S. government documents about
the Holocaust will likely reveal details of the United States' dealings with
Nazi war criminals who provided information during the Cold War, historians
said Monday.
Holocaust expert Richard Breitman said at a hearing on the federal
government's effort to declassify its Nazi war crimes records that work
hasn't started in earnest on the United States' documents about the
prosecution of war criminals.

Genealogists enjoy life in past lane in Laguna Niguel

LAGUNA NIGUEL--The search for the past can require the patience of a gold
miner, swirling and sifting the silt. Then, suddenly, there's a glint of
precious material.
Carmen Brussard's hundreds of hours hunched over microfiche ultimately led
to this stunning discovery: She and her husband, who met at a dance in Los
Angeles 34 years ago, are not the first joint love story from their
respective families. More than 300 years ago in Holland, an ancestor of the
67-year-old Laguna Hills woman married an ancestor of his.

County tries its hand at e-filing

by Warren Cornwall
Snohomish County government is dipping its toes into a new realm of
cyberspace with a test project enabling some businesses to file tax forms
over the Internet.
If successful, the program at the county assessor's office could lead the
way for people to file everything from development permits to court
documents directly from their computers, said one county official.
The first-of-its kind program for the county will allow officials to
consider "what is the role of e-filing and e-forms in government, and how is
that going to be able to affect the way we handle service levels," said John
Hartwigc, office automation manager with the county's information services
department.
