LIBRARY PROFILE: Founded in 1952 by pioneer jazz scholar Marshall

part of Rutgers University Libraries and is located in the John Cotton
Dana Library on the Rutgers-Newark Campus. The Institute is the world's

foremost jazz archives and research facility. Its collection consists
of sound recordings, books, periodicals and research files, oral
histories, photographs and negatives, scores and arrangements,
memorabilia, and over one hundred archival collections. The nearly 200
cubic feet of material contained in the Mary Lou Williams Collection
traces Williams' career from the 1920s to her death in 1981 as the
premiere female jazz pianist, composer and arranger. The collection
traces her journey as one of the few jazz musicians whose style evolved
from boogie woogie and the blues to post-bebop modernism. This rich
collection incorporates just about every format available in performing
arts archives: music manuscripts; rare and original sound recordings;
photographs and scrapbooks; correspondence; contracts, financial
documents, and publishing agreements; and artifacts and memorabilia.
