DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides professional reference service in response to requests for
assistance from telephone and in-house customers. Coordinates the email
reference service and HALS Reference Backup Program, which provides
reference assistance to libraries in the Houston Area Library System.
Instructs customers in the usage of indexes, reference materials and
library catalog. Trains BIC reference librarians in the usage of OCLC,
library catalog and other online databases. Performs other tasks
essential to efficient library operation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must be able
to use a computer to access/input information; ability to operate other
office equipment as necessary. Position requires stooping and bending;
lifting to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely about the work
environment.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One (1) year of professional librarian experience.
PREFERENCES
Customer/Public Service experience preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft
Windows 95 and Office 97 (Word, Excel, Access).
SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's
qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this
classification. The minimum to midpoint of this salary range is:
$34,974 - $42,073 Annually

CLOSING DATE Open Until Filled
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applications are accepted and must be received by the Human Resources
Department during posted opening and closing dates shown, between 9:00
am to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 611 Walker, Garden Level. First
preference will be given to those applications with a resume attached.
Successful candidates will be notified of their application status. All
new and rehires must pass a pre-employment drug test and are subject to
a physical examination and verification of information provided.
