old newspaper

I just received a donation of an old scrapbook from the Alumni office at my
college. Many items in the book are newspaper clippings or some kind of
paper, all of which are very brittle. We want to keep this book because it
was compiled by a long-time employee who was very important to the college.
The biggest problem is that the pages have some kind of adhesive on them
that looks like to me may keep me from removing the items without tearing
them. My question is: would it be okay to leave the items in the book and
xerox them on acid-free paper so that users can see and touch them without
doing further damage? I can then cross reference the original and copy in my
database. Or, is there an entire other approach I have not thought of? I
thought about possibly cutting the items out with scissors, but in some
places there are a large number of items on both sides of a page. However,
I am very worried about the effect of the acid in the paper on the items we
want to save.
