Re: Questions For University Archivists

We have modelled our usage statistics based on what other
library units are doing since the library administration compares
all departments on a similar basis. The library reference desk
routinely "hash" marks all questions...also noting if they are
received by telephone. The questions are further divided into
categories like directional (where's the bathroom), informational
(do you carry the local newspaper), instruction (showing someone
how to use the online catalog), etc.

I have been unable to subdivide my questions this finely, except
we have a category "tools" for showing people the collection
inventories and how to use them, and "talk to Dean" for those
analytical kinds of questions (would you have resources that
would help me analyze the differences in trade goods between
the British trading houses and the Spanish trading houses?
Of course the quick answer is "Yes, thanks for calling!" <grin>

Our statistics show numbers of people (includes telephone,
email, letters, walk-ins)...and numbers in terms of resources
used (collections, maps, photographs, etc.) The numbers of
people is further broken down by university (faculty, staff, UG,
G students), and between community doing genealogy
(local, out of town, out of state), and community doing
general research (local, out of town, out of state).

We do accept cash and checks in payment of fees
(photocopying, photographic reproduction, etc.) but
not credit cards at the present time.
