POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

INSTITUTION:  Children's Hospital, Boston

JOB TITLE:  Archivist

QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS desired.  Applicants should feel comfortable
working independently and have good communication skills.  A minimum of
1-3 years experience in an archives is desired.

SALARY:  Salary range $33,000.-35,000.  This is a full-time, 40 hours
per week position.

JOB DESCIPTION/SUMMARY:

The Archivist is responsible for supporting the mission of Children's
Hospital by developing, coordinating, and overseeing the Children's
Hospital Archives Program.  The hospital archivist is responsible for
working with physicians, researchers, senior administrators, department
managers, and other staff and employees to identify and appraise records
that are of significant and lasting historical, administrative, legal
and fiscal value to the institution and should be retained.  The
archivist is also responsible for organizing, preserving, and making
accessible those materials.  In addition, the archivist plans,
coordinates and distributes communications related to the services of
the Children's Hospital Archives program to the hospital audience.

The Archives Program is currently in the midst of several major projects
including a fundraising campaign, a history wall for the hospital and an
oral history project as well as trying to coordinate with the various
departments retention of their records in the Archives.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Identifies and appraises materials for their archival value.

2.  Manages, organizes and makes accessible archival materials.  This
includes making archival collections available through the hospital
library's electronic catalog.

3.  Provides reference assistant to requesters, both within and outside
the hospital, needing historical materials and information.

4.  Coordinates preservation activities to ensure that collections are
properly cared for and maintained.

5.  Supervises volunteers and interns.  Determines priorities for the
Archives and delegates work, as appropriate.

6.  Promotes the hospital's archives program within and outside of
Children's Hospital.  Writes historical pieces for hospital
publications.

7.  Responsible for all administrative aspects of the archives,
including staffing the hospital's Archives Committee.
8.  Plans, researches, and produces historical exhibits.

9.  Manages administrative responsibilities of the Archives including
developing a yearly budget and developing/reviewing policies and
procedures.

10. Provides positive and effective customer service that supports
departmental and hospital operations.
