Cataloging printouts of web-based serials

The head of our Serials Cataloging Department has posed this question about
some web-based university serial publications I sent him:

"I thought I'd probably never have to deal with this issue; I was wrong...

"Our University Archives (a department of the Library) has sent to us for
cataloging some printouts of web documents. These are documents that are
published only on the web, not in print form. I'm not sure how to deal
with these. This being an archives, it's the actual printout that's of
concern. And if it weren't for the printout, we wouldn't be concerning
ourselves with the online resource at all from a cataloging standpoint (we
generally don't catalog the university's online publications).

"Would it be considered "radical" to catalog the item in hand according to
the raw, uninterpreted AACR2? And add a note that it's a printout of an
online resource? Have other places tried this? Or has it been found
preferable to go ahead and catalog the item as a computer file, and make a
note and added holdings for the printout?

"I've tried searching through the Autocat archives, plus the online
procedural documents of several libraries, and was able to find very little
substantive discussion of this matter. I'd be interested in hearing what
y'all think. Thanks."

I will pass on to him any helpful hints the List can provide.

Thank you.
