Re: R-22 a hazard?



Any manufacturer of a chemical as in the case of R-22 is required to supply
users with an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet).  These MSDSs have the
necessary information to determine safety or exposure hazards.  Your
Maintenance Department should have the MSDA for R-22 on file.  If not, the
manufacturer should supply you with one.

My experience with R-22 is that it is relatively benign, but the MSDS is the
best source for information.  A leak of 4 pounds over 2 years is likely
about the same as most older automobile air conditioning systems.  At a cost
of about $40/lb., your maintenance people may wish to rethink their decision
to not fix the leak.

These materials are likely to be phased out due to their ozone depletion
potential.  Although this potential is not as high as the older
chlorofluorocarbons that were banned by the 1990 Montreal Protocol.
