Re: book cleaning tips

A heart-felt THANK YOU! to all who provided advice for how to clean books.

As a summary, Michael McColgin's reply posted to the listserv provided a
handy web site that analyzes the pros/cons & pricing of different dusting
cloths.

In the replies that came to me directly, one of the most handy tips was to
look up the NEDCC website http://www.nedcc.org and in their on-line
publication _Preservation of Library and Archival Materials_ The Technical
Leaflet Section 4, Leaflet 3 is "Cleaning Books & Shelves" by Sherelyn
Ogden. The entire publication is chock-full of handy info. from pest
management, to security, to disaster planning, to handling researchers!

Two responses suggested carefully vacuuming the books with a piece of
cheesecloth or fiberglass screening over the vacuum nozzle and taking care
not to pull apart the books.

One also suggested using paintbrushes to dust or "natural hair brushes" on
some of the more fragile books.

The caution to wear a mask & old clothes, placing an old sheet on top of the
worktable to wash after was made to prevent the spread of molds, red-rot,
etc. during cleaning.

Again, Thanks to all who helped out! January cleaning is going well!
