TITLE:          Catalog Librarian (Rare Books)
                Technical Services, Exempt, Regular full-time, 37.5
hours/week

MINIMUM OF SALARY RANGE:  $32,840 /annual rate

THE HUNTINGTON:  Located about 15 miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles,
was created in 1919 as an independent private library for advanced scholarly
research  in English and American history and literature, combined with
public art galleries and botanical gardens.  The Huntington exhibits
collections of British, Renaissance, and American art, rare books and
manuscripts, and 150 acres of specialized botanical gardens.  It is
consulted annually by some 1,800 scholars, visited by 500,000 members of the
general public, and employs approximately 300 with an annual operating
budget of over $14 million.

DESCRIPTION:  Working under general direction, performs original and
adaptive cataloging of library materials. Reports to Principal Rare Book
Cataloger.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Prepares catalog records in accordance with both
national standards and local and network policies appropriate to the
materials. This includes content designation according to the MARC format
and the performance of authority work on names, series, and subjects. It may
also include some searching, inputting and editing of records, and
participation on catalog maintenance projects.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:  Assists in creating and documenting departmental policies
and procedures, primarily through participation in regular departmental and
catalogers' meetings. Performs special projects as necessary. Other duties
as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be familiar with AACR2, LC classification, LC subject
headings, and the USMARC format. These skills would likely be obtained
through completion of the MLS degree or equivalent training or experience.
Must be thoroughly familiar with current national rare book cataloging
standards, familiarity with archival standards desirable. Should be
knowledgeable about integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities
(Innopac and RLIN preferred), knowledge of library microcomputer
applications desirable. Knowledge of the principles of bibliographic
description and the characteristics of early printed books. Working
knowledge of at least one classical and one modern European language highly
desirable. Must be tactful and courteous, and efficient in managing his or
her time. Two-three years special collections cataloging experience
required.
