Associate Librarian II to Librarian III ($45,780 - $76,476)

COLLECTIONS:
The resources of the Department of Special Collections play a major role in
the UCD General Library’s support of instruction and research. The Department
has numerous areas of strength including British Poetry 1789-1914 (the Kohler
Collection), Viticulture and Enology, History of Natural Sciences, Agricultural
Technology, Theater History, and Nature Writing and continues to collect
actively in these areas. Funding in recent years has made possible development
of major additional areas of strength. On the base of the Walter Goldwater
Radical Pamphlet Collection, the Department is creating a substantial resource
for right and left wing politics, both current and historical. The Department is
adding substantially to the collections in the areas of Chicano, Native
American, and Asian American Studies and is especially strong in
African-American Studies. The Gay and Lesbian Studies Collection has developed
rapidly and has become one of the Department’s most important research
collections.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Collections
and is responsible for administering the Department of Special Collections,
which includes the University Archives. Duties include formulation of policies
and procedures for collecting, acquisition, arrangement and description, access,
and preservation of the collections; active promotion of use of the collections,
of donor relationships and of grant support for the activities of the
department; implementation of digital technologies for access and preservation
of the collections; participation in UC systemwide planning, including programs
of the California Digital Library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong commitment to development of research collections. Extensive
experience and knowledge of the arrangement and description of special
collections materials, standards of bibliographic control and preservation,
archival principles and practices; administrative experience in a research or
academic library demonstrating strong management, analytical and planning
skills; knowledge of and experience in use of automated systems and digital
technologies in special collections; evidence of strong commitment to public
service and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students in a
rapidly changing and diverse environment; graduate degree in Library Science
from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent. Second graduate subject
degree strongly preferred.

BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic appointees. They earn 24 days of vacation and 12
days of sick leave per annum. The University has an excellent retirement system
which is coordinated with Social Security. Several health, dental, and vision
plans are currently provided by the University. Group term life insurance and
reduced enrollment fees are available.
