SAA Listserv changes and queries/answers available to all subscri bers

Dear colleagues:

At first I had little problem with the temporary test changes to the reply
format of the list. Tests are excellent diagnostics. But I also understood
that SAA found that a permanent change was unwarranted; that the greater
good to all subscribers was leaving well enough alone. Now we have
unexpectedly reversed course. Like many list correspondents comments I've
received, I concur: the change is not to the benefit of all.

Please, people...don't get all upset about having to use your delete key.
The rest of us might also be able to be trained about better means of making
replies without mass-posting to the annoyance of the "unconcerned."

The query relayed by Tom Berry about the use of star drills to break
concrete (and partially answered by Sharon Butcher on 22 Jan) is
illustrative of the great value of group access to all answers. I may not be
training myself to be an archivist or special collections librarian (I'm
headed for an MS in Historic Preservation) but having been a professional
interpretive historian in an industrial museum setting tells me that the
star drill question and the answers given so far are important. Reading
others' replies teaches me, too, even though I might not have reason to call
on the information gained until sometime in the murky future! Believe
me...I'll remember my daily lesson learned.

Like Sharon Butcher says, "I want to [learn] until they plant me in the
ground." The Listserv, as originally constructed, better serves the teaching
and guiding of all subscribers. And I hope the SAA changes it's collective
mind about the recent alterations made!
