Re: Univ. Archives and FERPA

1/31/01

My thanks to all who responded to my inquiry about whether FERPA
restrictions lapsed with the death of a student or after a long enough
period of time to presume the student's being deceased. Though with
individual nuances from institution to institution, the basic approach seems
to be to assume that privacy rights die with an individual and to open the
records after a lapse of 75 to 80 years or upon verifiable evidence of the
student's death.
