APDU "Of Significance ..." issue on Digital Data Preservation

I am pleased to announce that the latest issue of the Association of Public Data Users (APDU) topical journal "Of Significance ..." is now available. APDU is a national network that links users, producers and disseminators of government statistical data. Our members share a vital concern about the collection, dissemination, preservation, and interpretation of public data. The APDU homepage is located at http://www.apdu.org.

The latest issue of "Of Significance ..." (vol. 2, no. 2) is on the preservation of digital data. Included in this issue is a forward by Judith Rowe, recently retired from Princeton University, titled "A Data User's Perspective on Preservation"; an introduction to Permanent Public Access and Permanent Preservation, by Theodore J. Hull of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); perspectives on the past, present, and future of the preservation of digital records at NARA, including NARA's Electronic Records Archives project, by Bruce Ambacher and Daniel Jansen of NARA; an article titled "Preservation: Maintaining Information for the Future," by Janet Vavra, director of technical services at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research; an article on the Federal Depository Library Program's (FDLP) program for providing long-term access to electronic publications by George Barnum, electronic collections manager of the FDLP; an article describing the Development of a Generalized Resource Extraction Tool for Aggregate Data (GRETA) at the University of Minnesota, by William Block and Wendy Treadwell of that institution; and a case study on issues relating to the archival appraisal and preservation of the digital images of Census 2000 individual returns by David McMillen on the staff of Congressman Henry Waxman and the National Archives Assembly.

Non-members may obtain single copies of "Of Significance ..." for $45.00. A limited number of copies are currently available. APDU member institutions should receive their copy shortly. Individuals or institutions interested in ordering copies of this publication should contact Teresa Hall Allen at the Association of Public Data Users, P.O. Box 12538, Arlington, VA 22219; email TeresaH@smdi.com, Phone: (703) 807-2327; FAX: (703) 528-2857. APDU can handle requests to purchase issues by either e-mail, fax, or telephone in that order -- method of payment should be included.
