Re: Proper carpeting for mobile shelving decking

When the Milwaukee Public Museum Library and Archives
installed compact shelving in 1985, we found that
linoleum over the plywood decking was going to cause
a variety of problems, not the least of which was that
it would have caused us to go over the $300,000
project budget.

Our Spacesaver installer - John Maye and Associates,
now Storage Systems of Wisconsin - recommended "carpet
tile", i.e. carpet squares, and found a indoor-outdoor
brand manufactured by Mohawk Carpet Mills. We have
been delighted with the results. After 15 years of
heavy duty use with book carts and stiletto heels
(favored by museum marketing types) and the occasional
porcupine let loose by visiting volunteers, it still
looks fine.

The MPM Conservation Dept. routinely monitors for
insect infestations throughout the building because of
the restaurants on the ground floor and catered events
in the exhibit halls but the bugs that are around seem
to shun the carpeting.

I realize this contradicts a lot of advice on the
subject but the experience at MPM has been very
positive. It is hard to quantify the quiet, warmth
and visual appeal the carpet gives the stacks, offices
and reference areas but it is a big part of most
people's initial reaction to our facility.
