Re: Spam

I moderate a listserv with close to 1400 on, and there are some simple things
which can be done to reduce the level of Spam.

The easiest is to change a line in the header to say:

* Send= Private

rather than:

* Send= Public

Which is what it currently is. "* Send= Public" means that anyone can post,
even non-subscribers. Having people confirm their subscription greatly cuts
down on spam because it reduces the chances of having spammers automatically
subscribe, that one extra step. That's all moot though by giving the general
public the ability to post.

Now, before I go to far, there may be reasons for this setting. One of them
could be that there are many who want to post, who access from different
places/machines and couldn't because listserv requires an exact address match.
That makes it annoying, because you bounce messages, and get told by the
machine that you're not subscribed, when you may very well be. That's a
listowners call.

While a pain, the level of spam really isn't that high, but it is
inappropriate... More annoying are attachments, which could be dealt with by
adding:

Attachments= No,Filter

to the header. That means the message goes through, but the attachment is
stripped out...
