Re: 1903 Locomotive

Jan, Catherine and all,

While I don't know what became of the mighty CRI&G, whatever parts of it
served Irving most certainly didn't end up as part of C&NW. The closest the
C&NW came to Texas was Kansas City and St. Louis.

My guess is that, based on the similarity of names, it was affiliated with
the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific (as in "The Rock Island Line is a mighty
fine line . . ."). In the olden days, most - if not all - the railroads
reaching Texas from out of state operated within the state through
subsidiaries or other such arrangements. The Rock Island went out of
business in the 1970s, and I think the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) and
Southern Pacific took over their operations in northern Texas.

The St. Louis & San Francisco (a.k.a. Frisco), Santa Fe, Missouri Pacific
(Texas & Pacific in Texas), Southern Pacific (through subsidiaries Texas &
New Orleans and St. Louis Southwestern, a.k.a. Cotton Belt) and Fort Worth &
Denver/Colorado & Southern (both affiliated with the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy) also served the Dallas/Irving area in the latter 20th century. CB&Q
and its affiliates became part on Burlington Northern in 1970, and around
1980 BN merged with the Frisco.

After the megamergers of the 1990s, all that remain are Burlington Northern
Santa Fe (created by merger of BN and Santa Fe) and Union Pacific (which
entered Texas by merging with MP and then the Katy, then went on to swallow
everything else whole, including the former Rock Island and - ironically -
the C&NW).

Of course, there's always the possibility that the CRI&G train used a
locomotive from another railroad altogther, such as from one of their
connecting railroads in the area.

Best wishes,
