Nicholson Baker

There is a fascinating and thorough review of Baker's latest book, "Double
Fold" in the New York Review of Books at:
http://www.nybooks.com/nyrev/WWWfeatdisplay.cgi?20010426016R. The review by
Richard Darnton grants that Baker is often correct in identifying that some
terrible things have happened in the past under the aegis of "preservation;"
however, he also makes a strong case that Baker greatly dilutes the
effectiveness of his argument with lots of novelistic and journalistic
rhetorical tricks along with a single-minded hysteria that fails to grant
the exceptions to his argument. His conclusion: notwithstanding some valid
policy recommendations, a "journalistic jeremiad." But almost certainly a
worthwhile read for anyone in the business of preserving our cultural
heritage.
