Reynolds Associates Research Fellowships

The Historical Collections Unit of Lister Hill Library of the Health
Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, is proud to announce the
recipients of its Reynolds Associates Research Fellowships for 2001. The
awardees are:

Catherine Conner, MA Candidate, Auburn University

Catherine Conner will utilize documents from UAB Archives to study the
impact the University of Alabama at Birmingham's development had on the
transformation of Birmingham's economy from one based on manufacturing to
one based more on service industries. In addition, she will explore how the
growth of UAB altered the city's geography and population.

Peter Jones, Fellow and Librarian, King's College

As part of an ongoing project to develop an electronic database catalogue of
medieval scientific and medical writings, based on Thorndike and Kibre's
Catalogue of Incipits of Mediaeval Scientific Writings in Latin (1963),
Peter Jones will gather data from various Latin manuscripts housed within
the Reynolds Historical Library.

Jeffrey S. Reznick, Research Fellow in the History of Medicine, Science, and
Technology, Emory University

Through the study of monographs, reference works, and trade catalogues in
the Reynolds Historical Library, Jeffrey Reznick will add key historical
components to his study of artificial limbs and their users in the United
States from the 1840's to the present.

Ann Starr, Visual Artist and Faculty Member, Northwestern University Medical
School

Ann Starr will do observational drawings of waxes in the Nott Pathology
Collection, a part of the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, that
illustrate deforming human conditions. The drawings will be part of a larger
portfolio that provides material for reflections on how medicine and the
larger society interpret abnormal physical conditions.
