POSITION OPENING

ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST/GRANTS WRITER -- LIBRARIAN I
BIRMINGHAM (ALABAMA) PUBLIC LIBRARY, ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT

THE FACILITY
The Archives Department of the Birmingham Public Library serves as the
archives for the City of Birmingham and numerous local organizations and
institutions. The collection, which includes 12,000 linear feet of archival
material and more than 400,000 photographic images, is particularily strong
in the subject areas of civil rights and race relations, industry and the
labor movement, women's history, and religious history.

DEFINITION
This is a professional library position involving a wide range of tasks
performed under the direct supervision of the Head of the Archives
Department.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assist the Head of the department in the identification, acquisition,
transportation, and preparation of archival materials for research. Assist
patrons with research, including their training in the use of research
materials. Answer telephone, mail, fax, and e-mail queries. Write grant
proposals and applications to secure funding for special projects and
activities for the library.  Assist the Head of the department with the
daily administration of the department and its staff. Other work as
required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of the
acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, conservation, care, and
handling of archival materials. A strong commitment to public service.
Knowledge of Alabama history. Prior experience with archives, manuscripts,
and other nonbook materials preferred. Ability to direct the work of
nonprofessional staff. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and
researchers both orally and in writing, and maintain cordial and productive
relationships with them. Strong background in grantswriting.  Knowledge of
personal computers and computer software.  Ability to lift cartons weighing
up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity and eyesight necessary to perform
intricate tasks, ability to tolerate dust and molds, and familiarity with
basic word processing programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university plus a
master's degree in library science, the social sciences, or humanities.
Experience or training in archival theory and practice.

HOURS AND BENEFITS
80 hours biweekly; Grade 20, Step 1; $1,125.60 biweekly.  Excellent benefits
