Reasons to Wear Gloves

We require all researchers to wear cotton gloves in our archives, the
Galveston and Texas History Center. We serve the general public, which
often has a cavalier attitude toward handling original materials.
(Several weeks ago, I sent one individual to the restroom to wash her
hands when she applied hand lotion as she was checking her belongings.
She fortunately used our vertical files.) Requiring researchers to wear
cotton gloves while they handle all of our archival materials,
manuscript and otherwise, sends a message, we believe, to the general
public that we are serious about the preservation of our materials.
Extremely brittle items, such as acidic letters, we encapsulate or house
in Mylar sleeves for added protection. Oversize items, such as mortuary
registers, we are in the process of microfilming to reduce wear and tear
on the original volumes.
