Re: Sharon Centanne's STOP CHENEY email to list

I don't think that is the issue here. The issue is that this is a high
traffic listserv. I am on four different listservs as it is in order to keep
current about anything in archives, pharmacy libraries, medical libraries,
and libraries in my area. Between those listservs and anything else I
receive, I have enough email in my inbox to keep me occupied without having
to listen to someone's ravings about political issues. Of course, like
everyone else, I just hit the delete key on anything I don't want to read,
just like I change the channel on my tv if I hit on something I don't want
to watch, but it would make life a lot easier if we stuck to the original
topic of our listserv -- archival work. If the "political issue" actually
has something to do with archives, that's fine. However, I am sure there are
plenty of listservs, newspapers, congressman, and special interest groups
out there that would be more than willing to discuss things outside the
scope of archives.

The opinions expressed above are my own and not that of my institution.

Dear Steve,

I fully realize that some archivists feel that they are not able to
express their opinions at work, for fear of recrimination, or for other
reasons, but where were you taught that you should not express your opinions
online in a professional archival forum? I'm puzzled by the attitude that
politics are separate from archives. They are directly related to each
other--look at how archives resolve or clarify or complicate historical
debates by providing factual or conflicting or stunning new information to
the discussion. I just don't understand archivists wanting to remain above
the fray of current political discussion about vitally important
governmental
decisions that affect our jobs and facilities long-term. Oh, well--can't
you
just delete what you don't want to read? Politics make the world go
around.
