EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
              ASSISTANT PHOTOGRAPH
CURATOR/DATABASE ARCHIVIST

This is a full-time position in the Special
Collections Department of the Margaret Herrick
Library.  Salary will start at $32,000, with
benefits.  Position available June 18, 2001.

DUTIES
 Maintain the collection of color materials and
its database (currently InMagic, but eventually to

be on MARC-based Endeavor Voyager).  This includes
identifying, sleeving, cataloging, and
filing color slides, negatives, transparencies,
and motion picture film frames.  Process and
catalog other photographic collections (primarily
photographic prints) and gifts for inclusion in
library database.

 Under direction of Database Archivist work to
assist other photographic staff to place
photograph inventories in library database.

 Process photograph duplication orders for library
patrons, which includes dealing with
in-house and outside laboratories, completing the
necessary forms and invoices, and refiling
the original photographs.

 Pull and refile Special Collections photographs
for library patrons.  This may require the
occasional handling of record-storage boxes
weighing up to 35 lbs.  However, most materials
are in envelopes, folders, and expandos stored in
filing cabinets.

REQUIREMENTS
 Library cataloging and archival organizational
skills essential.  M.L.S. or archival degree
required.

 Strong computer skills, including experience with
the PC platform and databases.  Experience
cataloging in MARC preferred.

 Good knowledge of American film history,
especially the ability to recognize and identify
productions and personnel.  Formal study of film
history very helpful.  Familiarity with a variety
of photographic media and processes.

 Strong organizational and research skills.
Ability to pay careful attention to detail.

 Ability to work well with staff and library
patrons.
