Re: Hotel Deposit and Cancellation Policies

You may be surprised
to know that, for most convention hotels in major
cities, a prepaid deposit of one night's room and tax and a forty-eight
to
seventy-two hour cancellation policy is standard procedure. Given
three days
notice, it is much easier to "resell" a canceled hotel room
then if the room
is canceled the day of check-in.
While the hotel is simply trying to protect themselves from lost revenue,
this could be an unwelcome surprise to the unsuspecting convention go-er.
When I called to make my reservation, I was told that my card would be
charged
for one night right away (which I didn't really appreciate either, but
I've got to
be there, so I'll end up using it anyway). But I was led to believe
that it was being
done because this is a conference block of rooms, and that if I can't
make it to the
conference, SAA won't lose money by losing a room in its block. As
some of you may
recall from the hotel chain discrimination suit surrounding the Denver
conference, if a group
cancels its conference, then the group (SAA) gets charged a very hefty
cancellation fee.
Perhaps Debbie can say if this also applies to a certain number of
canceled rooms in the conference
hotel.
